Geographical Loto

Geographical Loto is one game in a series of Loto games which Jaques created and published from 1860 onwards. The game name, Loto, first appeared on their business card of 1814. Lotto has generally been a numbers game of chance played socially for small prizes or for huge prizes as with the National Lottery. Its origins can be traced back 2000 years to the Han Dynasty in China. In the early 20th Century, it achieved widespread success as Bingo where numbers are drawn randomly from a bag and players mark them off numbers on a card. Jaques version of Loto has many variations and shows their ingenuity in creating games on a theme. Geographical Loto is perhaps the most difficult Loto game Jaques devised. It is not a simple matching game and required a good knowledge of geography to play. The players are dealt cards that are maps of different countries and on these maps are small points where cities ought to be. With no help from the maps the players must match the name of the city with the correct country and location as city names are drawn from the bag. 16 countries are included and city descriptions include their names and also what they are best known for. The players put counters into a pool which can be won with complete, correct cards but the key is kept until the end when the cards are checked for any mistakes. This was another educational game by Jaques.
