On The Cards

On The Cards or Events that May Happen, was one of twelve card games originally published by David Ogilvy under their series of one shilling games. Ogilvy’s series of board and card games (active 1841-1879) was intended for the instruction and amusement of young people during the Victorian era. This is called a comic game and any number of ladies and gentlemen may play. To commence they sit on opposite sides of the table and when a gentleman ascertains the right lady he proceeds to ask her questions contained on his card. If too indelicate or improper he may write the number of the question down on paper, there are 20 questions, and hand it across. The lady may do the same should her response express the feelings she possesses. questions range from ‘do you wish to marry?’ to ‘what do you require in a lover?’ Answers might be ‘I have but will not say when’ and ”a very handsome person’. This game allowed for flirtatious behaviour between young people and it’s possible to imagine the blushes, hilarity and the intrigue such a game might afford. When David Ogilvy retired from business in 1878, it continued to be published by John Jaques & Son. This game dates from 1869 and the collection holds one pack with 52 cards and the rules.
