Spelka

Spelka is a word game which was first published by Jaques c.1908, and has some similarities with the older game of Spelling Bee. The rule suggest that this game was devised by a ‘few members of a well-known literary Club’. The members enjoyed the game they wished it to be published and available to others. The original pack contained 52 cards, each card showing a letter of the alphabet and a number in the corner indicating how many cards with that letter are in the pack and also how many points the loser has to pay. Players basically create words with the cards they hold getting rid of them at the same time with the winner having no cards left. However, this rules leaflet is quite long at 16 pages with hints and tips and examples which usually means it is quite an involved game presenting some challenges and a game that requires determined players! This example has two packs both of which are in the original box which contains the rules leafltet, two compete packs (52 cards in each) and 45 red, white and blue counters.
