Zoological Loto

Zoological Loto is one game in a series of Loto games which Jaques created and published from 1860 onwards. The game name, Loto, first appeared on their business card of 1814. Lotto has generally been a numbers game of chance played socially for small prizes or for huge prizes as with the National Lottery. Its origins can be traced back 2000 years to the Han Dynasty in China. In the early 20th Century, it achieved widespread success as Bingo where numbers are drawn randomly from a bag and players mark them off numbers on a card. Jaques version of Loto has many variations and shows their ingenuity in creating games on a theme. Zoological Loto was published around 1886 and was a fairly simple edition in the Jaques Loto series. Images of animals were presented on cards to players and it was merely a matter of matching the correct name to the animal in order to complete the cards and win the pool. To make it more interesting players might also have to answer questions about the animal, including its Latin name and its preferred food. Getting this answer wrong would mean the player had to wait for the card to be called another time. Again, Jaques liked an educational aspect to their games.
