Ringolette was hailed as a new and amusing version of parlour quoits when it was launched in 1855. The coloured rings corresponded with standards on the board and the idea was to ensure the correct coloured ring fell onto its own standard. Playing for a stake, the participants earned more or less points depending on where the ring landed.
