Sol

The Game of Sol was also known as ‘The Signs of the Zodiac’ and was described as a ‘capital round game’ for any number of players. The pack consists of all the signs of the zodiac represented four times with a colour included, blue, yellow, red and black. There are also four sun or sol cards also with each colour included. The cards are dealt out with six held back and the player who starts names a zodiac sign and the colour,. For example, Cancer blue, the next player must add to the blue collection, with for example, Taurus blue and so on until Sol blue, the highest in the suit, is played, when the sequence is complete. The main objective is to get rid of all the cards in your hand. A pool is created for this game with an agreed stake for the winner to take. Interestingly these cards are of a slightly grotesque style of illustration with Taurus the Bull depicting a matador running away while the bull tosses someone else in the air. Gemini shows a large, stern lady being followed by her slightly smaller husband struggling to carry two wailing twins in his wife’s wake. Leo the Lion is depicted in evening dress being adored by young ladies who are ignoring other men in favour of the Lion. This game was published by Jaques in 1875 and this complete set has 52 cards and includes the box and the rules leaflet.
