Jaques devised this game, The Bride, as a game of matching pairs, but it can also be played in a way similar to Happy Families. There are 48 cards with flowers assigned to each month, four flowers for every month. English and botanical names are given and the bridegroom – the myrtle sprig from February – is laid down on the table with the players only adding flowers to the centre if they are in pairs due to the month they bloom. The players draw from their neighbours going round the table and eventually the bride – a Snowdrop and also from February- will be the last card to be paired with her groom. It is noted that another way of playing the game is by following the rules of play for Happy Families with these cards. The box that comes with this game is dedicated as ‘A Welcome to HRH the Princess of Wales’ which suggests this game was devised and arranged to be published at the time of a royal marriage. March 1863 was when Edward VII married his bride, Alexandra of Denmark, and its noted that a copy had been presented to HRH and ‘graciously received’. Once again, Jaques connect a game with current affairs and news, this time a royal wedding, in order to promote a game and a new product. There are four packs of this game, which was published around 1870, in the collection and all are complete with 48 cards in each pack. Only one pack has the box and instructions for play.
